Guidelines for awarding honorary membership

1. Honorary Membership is awarded to reflect the contribution of an individual to Aerosol Science, in line with clause 9 of the Society Constitution:
2. Honorary Membership may be conferred on those who have distinguished themselves in the field of aerosol science, e.g. by:
        a) outstanding research or inventions, or
        b) holding leading positions in prominent undertakings, or
        c) outstanding success in teaching
   These notes further clarify the criteria for awarding Honorary membership, and the processes involved.
3. Honorary Membership will be awarded for contributions to Aerosol Science within the UK and Ireland. While it is desirable and expected that nominees will be members of the Society, membership prior to the award is not obligatory.
4. Honorary Membership will be awarded following consideration of nominations from Society members. Nominations should be supported by at least two current Society members.
5. Nominations should normally be submitted following a call for nominations from the Society Committee. Under normal circumstances, a call will go out every two years (starting from 1998). Sufficient time will be allowed for successful candidates to be awarded Honorary Membership at the Society AGM.
6. Nominations should be made to the Committee following a call for nominations. Each nomination should be supported by a case outlining the suitability of the nominee for Honorary membership. The format of this is not defined, but it should be sufficiently comprehensive to allow the Committee to make an informed decision on whether to award Honorary Membership. It is suggested that up to 2 A4 pages giving the case, plus additional supporting material such as testimonials and a list of key publications, will be sufficient.
7. Nominations will be assessed by the Society Committee (or a designated sub-committee), against the criteria outlined in section 9 of the constitution. It is expected that just one award will be made following each call, although the committee reserve the right to either make no awards or multiple awards, depending on the quality of the nominations received.
