An Aerosol Society Research Scholarship
The Aerosol Society intends to award a Scholarship annually to a new graduate undertaking a course of study leading to a Doctorate at a United Kingdom or Irish University. It is hoped that this Scholarship will encourage a young science graduate to undertake postgraduate training in the field of aerosol science, and at the same time gain some experience in the presentation of work to a scientific audience.
This Scholarship will be competitive and the successful student will be chosen on the basis of the proposed project, an essay written by the student on the subject of the project, and an interview. Candidates who are in receipt of an award/salary at a level above standard Research Council grants will not be eligible. Candidates must have registered for their research after 31st December 2007 i.e. by the closing date for applications (31st March 2009) candidates will either be in their first year or in the first months of their second year of study leading to a PhD. They must also be in full-time further education.
Projects
Any project which falls within the areas of interest of The Aerosol Society will be considered. These are broad and encompass airborne particles or droplets in relation to aerobiology, agriculture, atmospherics, coagulation, condensation, deposition, diffusion, dynamics, electrostatics, evaporation, filtration, generation techniques, industrial processes, inhalation, instrumentation, light scattering, manufacture, occupational hygiene, radioactivity, respiratory disease, resuspension, sampling, shape, standards, therapy and thermodynamics. Projects may be directed at the exploration of basic problems, or may be of a more applied nature.
Applications
There is no specific form required for this Scholarship. Notification of the Scholarship will be sent to academic institutions in November, together with copies to the appropriate Research Councils. The closing date for applications will be 31st March 2009. Academic supervisors who have either self funding students or a PhD grant confirmed by the appropriate funding body may approach candidates interested in submitting an application. The supervisor is required to produce a brief outline of the project - about one page (A4) - to accompany the candidate's application. Before the award is presented, the society will require proof of grant.
The candidate is required to submit a short essay (3000 words) on the topic of the project by the closing date. The essay should give an impression of the candidate's grasp of, and enthusiasm for, the subject as well as an indication of his or her ability. A short CV should also accompany the essay.
These applications will be judged by the Awards Subcommittee of the Society. On this basis, a small number of candidates will be invited for interview by this subcommittee. Normally, they will make their recommendations for the Award known in April.
Terms and Conditions of the Scholarship
The award will be £600 for the first year, rising in line with Research Council grants over the second and third years of study. The award will not continue beyond this point, even if the thesis has yet to be submitted.
Award recipients are required to write short annual reports for inclusion in the Society's Newsletter. In addition, they will make at least one oral or poster presentation at an AGM of the Society, summarising progress on the project. This will normally take place during the final year of study, before a thesis has been submitted. The Society will cover the registration and accommodation charges for the recipient to attend this one conference.
