About
The Aerosol Society was formed in 1986 to provide a national forum whereby various groups in the UK and Irish Republic involved in different aspects of aerosol research could interact and co-ordinate their efforts. The Society has a written constitution, in which its structure and aims are laid down. Briefly, the Society aims to:
- Promote all scientific branches of aerosol research,
- Promote by means of meetings and publications the spread of information on an interdisciplinary basis, and to make available a pool of expert knowledge,
- Encourage international co-operation,
- Recruit new members and assist in training,
-
Encourage investment in aerosol research.
Since 1986, we have held Annual Conferences, which extend over several days and cover a wide range of topics. These conferences provide the opportunity for workers in different aerosol- related fields to meet, to present and discuss their work. Conference proceedings, in the form of bound extended abstracts, are published. In 1992 hosted the European Aerosol Conference in Oxford, in 1998 we hosted the International Aerosol Conference in Edinburgh, whilst in 2000 we hosted the European Aerosol Conference in Dublin.
In addition, one-day meetings on more specialised topics (such as particle shape, aerosols and veterinary medicine, aerosols and electrostatic charge, and a continuing series on drug delivery to the lungs) are also held.
The Society is a member of the International Aerosol Research Assembly (IARA) and the European Aerosol Assembly (EAA), and co-operates with other national and international bodies which have an interest in aerosol science (e.g. BOHS, Royal Society of Chemistry Particle Characterisation Group, ISAM, ILASS, to name but a few), and informs members of forthcoming events through its regular Newsletter and mailings. The one-day meetings mentioned above are often held jointly with other interested societies.
A directory, containing information on members, of whom there are over 250,their affiliation, areas of interest and equipment in use, is provided for members.
Membership subscription fees are 15.00 Pounds Sterling per year for Ordinary Membership and 150.00 Pounds Sterling for Corporate Membership. In line with our policy of encouraging and supporting students in the field of aerosol research, student membership is free.
We have financially supported the attendance of a number of UK students at international conferences in order to present their work, and award a scholarship annually to a post-graduate studying aerosol science at a UK or Irish University.
